To help your garden survive the colder months, here are our ten top tips to keep in mind:
- Rake fallen leaves
Regularly rake up fallen leaves from lawns, flower beds, and pathways. Leaves left on the ground can block light, trap moisture, and promote disease in lawns. Compost the leaves if possible.
- Plant spring bulbs
Autumn is the perfect time to plant spring-flowering bulbs such as daffodils, tulips, crocuses, and hyacinths. Planting them now ensures a beautiful display come springtime.
- Prune Shrubs
Prune shrubs to remove dead or diseased branches and shape them for healthy growth. Avoid pruning spring-flowering shrubs, as this may reduce their bloom next year.
- Tidy up perennials and borders
Cut back perennials (plants that come up year after year) that have finished flowering to tidy up borders and prevent disease.
- Protect tender plants
Cover tender plants with lining to protect them from frost. Mulch around the base of plants to provide extra insulation.
- Harvest remaining crops
Harvest the last of your summer crops such as tomatoes, beans, and courgettes. You can also pick late-season crops like apples, pears, and squashes before the first frosts.
- Divide and transplant perennials
Divide overcrowded clumps of perennials such as hostas, daylilies, and asters. This rejuvenates the plants and helps them grow more vigorously. Autumn is also a good time to transplant any perennials that are in the wrong place.
- Clean and store garden tools
Clean, sharpen, and oil garden tools before storing them away for winter. This prevents rust and ensures they are ready to use in spring.
- Prepare soil for winter
Dig over and mulch vegetable plots and flower beds with well-rotted compost or manure. This improves soil structure and fertility, making it ready for planting in spring.
- Plant trees and shrubs
Autumn is an ideal time to plant new trees and shrubs. The soil is still warm, allowing roots to establish before winter sets in. This gives plants a head-start for spring.
