How to make sure you are using lithium-ion batteries safely
You may often find lithium-ion batteries in devices such as laptops, e-cigarettes and vapes, e-scooters and newer models of mobility scooters, e-bikes, electric vehicles, and battery energy storage systems. They are an efficient and effective form of rechargeable battery if used in the right way, but they can be dangerous if they are charged, stored or used incorrectly.
There’s been an increase in the number of fires being caused by lithium-ion batteries, with incidents doubling every year over the past four years. We’ve put together some simple tips you can follow to help keep yourself, your family and neighbours safe.
Buy your device from a trusted source
- Make sure you’re buying any lithium-ion battery powered device from a trustworthy source.
Charge, use and store devices containing lithium-ion batteries safely
- Always use the original charger that came with the device
- Charge your device on a hard surface, away from anything flammable
- Don’t leave your devices on charge overnight
- Your device should have air circulation around it when you’re charging or storing it. For example, don’t put your phone under a pillow when you’re charging it
- Don’t store, charge or use your device anywhere too hot (above 45C) or cold (below 0C).
Make sure your device isn’t damaged
- Look for obvious signs of damage to your device. If it’s been dropped or received a heavy impact but doesn’t seem damaged, it may still be damaged internally
- If the device has been crushed, punctured or immersed in water, it increases the risk of a fire
- Don’t charge your device if it’s been damaged. Follow the advice below to dispose of the battery safely.
If you have to dispose of a lithium-ion battery, do it safely
- If you need to dispose of a lithium-ion battery, put it in the ‘waste electronics’ section at your local recycling centre. You’ll know if the battery used in the device is a lithium one, as the device should have an ‘Li’ symbol on it.
- Tape up the terminal to reduce the risk of fire.
