Does it have to be that way though? If you struggle with your mood in January, there are some simple and practical things that you can do to help keep the blues away:
Be self-compassionate - Give yourself a break. You’re not the only person who feels this way and there are lots of good reasons why you might feel low or sluggish. Don’t be too hard on yourself and try to focus on the things that make you happy. No one is perfect, how boring would it be if we were?
Practice self-care - It’s important to get enough sleep, get some fresh air, a bit of exercise and eat well. Even a ten-minute walk during the daylight hours can really lift your spirits. How about planning some simple activities that bring you happiness like reading, having a cuppa with a friend or learning a new recipe?
Wait for the low mood to pass – Sometimes we just need to allow ourselves to feel those moments when we’re low or we don’t have much energy. Forcing it can sometimes only make it worse. Try making space for your feelings, sitting with them rather than trying to resist them.
Focus on what you are grateful for - Write down five things you’re grateful for in your life and the part you played in making them happen, as this can help give you a different perspective. If you’re struggling, it can really help to tell someone how you are feeling. If you don’t feel you can open up to friends or family, and your low mood persists we have partnered with Mind and Togetherall to provide you with FREE mental health support through our Breathing Space programme. Hundreds of Orbit customers have taken advantage of this support and you can too.
Here’s what one of our residents told us about Breathing Space; “You have supported me and given me loads of help. I am in a better place now. I know there is help out there. It made me realise someone cares."
