All you have to do is spend 15 minutes in the great outdoors counting the number and type of butterflies in your area. You can visit the Big Butterfly Count website to download a handy tip sheet to help you identify the butterflies in your outdoor space. You can do your count in your garden, local nature reserve, park, or just out and about on a walk. Once you’ve counted the butterflies, simply submit your numbers on the Big Butterfly Count website (this includes if you didn’t see any butterflies as it still helps understand the wider picture and helps focus conservation work in the future). You can also download the Big Butterfly Count app and upload your numbers there. It’s quick and easy!
This year, more than ever the butterflies need our help. Since the 1970s butterflies have been in decline and after a year of extreme climates and weather it is feared their numbers are decreasing more than ever before! By taking part in the survey, we can help scientists understand what is happening to the natural world in connection with climate change or any other environmental factors.
The deadline is Sunday 7 August, so get counting! For more information and to take part, please visit:
